Mississippi's state flower is the grande flora, big flower, the Magnolia. These were picked and painted the same day in the Yazoo Federal Correctional Facility, Yazoo City, where I was the Artist in Residence through a grant with the National Endowment for the Arts, The Federal Justice Department and the MS Museum of Art. Some of the inmates had never seen, nor smelled, a Magnolia. Quite an experience! This was my demonstration painting, sold and hangs in Art and Soul of the South, Washington Street, Vicksburg.
Born and raised in Vicksburg, MS, currently living in Starkville, MS. Professional artist, past adjunct professor at Mississippi College, and Wayland Baptist University at the Kenya Campus. My painting styles run the gamut from realism, abstraction and nonobjective with a variety of media and subjects. I love nature and the outdoors and light and color. My first grant received was a federal block grant through the MS Department of Human Services in which I created a video program on how to develop creative thinking. This series,THE CREATIVE CHILD, was used for continuing education credits for child caregivers.
