Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary, otherwise known as "The Rock," was steeped in legend. Located on a desolate island in the middle of the shark infested San Francisco Bay, Alcatraz was known for being "inescapable." Although Alcatraz has been abandoned for many years, John depicted the desolation of "The Rock" during its operational years and how the predawn guard shift change may have appeared to a sailor passing by, or a new inmate arriving to serve out a life sentence.
